President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that the next phase of Nigeria’s democratic journey must focus on delivering economic freedom and prosperity to citizens.
Reflecting on the significance of June 12, the President said the historic election demonstrated the possibility of a united Nigeria transcending ethnic and religious divisions.
“June 12, 1993, revealed the possibility of a true Nigerian nation,” he said.
According to him, while the heroes of the democracy struggle succeeded in securing political freedom, today’s leaders must now ensure that democracy translates into economic opportunities and improved living standards.
“The heroes of June 12 secured political freedom. Our challenge is to secure economic freedom,” he said.
The President said that democracy cannot be measured solely by elections and political rights.
He said citizens must experience its benefits through employment opportunities, economic growth and social advancement.
“Democracy must be felt in the quality of people’s lives—in opportunities for youth, in prosperous farmers, successful entrepreneurs, and the dignity of our workers,” he said.
He said that the reforms being implemented by his administration are designed to create the foundation for long-term prosperity.
He said the government remains committed to reducing inflation, increasing productivity, supporting businesses and expanding opportunities across all sectors.
According to the President, political freedom without economic empowerment leaves citizens unable to realise their potential fully.
He called on Nigerians to support ongoing efforts to transform the economy and improve living conditions.
The President expressed confidence that the nation is moving steadily toward a future where democratic governance delivers both freedom and prosperity.
He said that securing economic freedom would be the defining achievement of the current generation, just as democracy was the defining achievement of the June 12 generation.
