President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerians to continue to defend democratic institutions, saying the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule remain a remarkable achievement that must not be taken for granted.
In his Democracy Day address, the President celebrated the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic system and the enduring spirit of its people.
“Today, we celebrate not only democracy but also the enduring Nigerian spirit,” he said.
He said Nigerians have consistently demonstrated their commitment to democratic governance by choosing leaders through elections and resolving disputes through lawful institutions.
“For 27 unbroken years, since May 29, 1999, Nigerians have chosen their leaders through the ballot, witnessed peaceful transitions of power, and resolved disagreements in courtrooms and legislative chambers—not through violence,” he said.
The President described the current democratic era as the longest period of civilian governance in the nation’s history.
“We have experienced the longest stretch of civilian rule in our history,” he said.
Acknowledging existing challenges, the President maintained that democracy remains the best system for national development.
“Our democracy is not perfect, but it is ours, and we must continue to defend and strengthen it,” he said.
The President also urged political actors, electoral officials and security agencies to ensure peaceful elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
“I urge INEC, security agencies, and all parties to ensure these polls are peaceful and credible. Democracy fails when citizens doubt the process,” he said.
The President called on the National Assembly, Judiciary, media organisations and civil society groups to remain steadfast in protecting democratic values.
“To our National Assembly, Judiciary, the Press, and Civil Society: you are the guardrails of our republic,” he said.
In a notable remark, the President welcomed criticism while stressing the need for patriotism.
“Criticise me, disagree with me, but never stop believing in Nigeria,” he said.
