Fiscal discipline and tax reform will remain central to government policy in 2026 as Nigeria works toward long-term economic stability, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said.
The President said this Thursday in a New Year message to Nigerians.
Referring to the 2026 Appropriation Bill recently submitted to the National Assembly, the President said the document reflects the reform path already taken. “A few days ago, I presented the 2026 Appropriation Bill to the National Assembly,” he said.
He explained that reforms introduced so far are laying a solid base.
“Our administration has implemented critical reforms that are laying a solid foundation for long-term stability and prosperity,” he said.
The President tressed the importance of patience and unity.
“With patience, fiscal discipline, and unity of purpose, Nigeria will emerge in 2026 stronger and better positioned for sustained growth,” he said.
As inflation and borrowing costs ease, the President said more resources would be available.
“As inflation and interest rates moderate, we expect increased fiscal space for productive investment in infrastructure and human capital development,” he said.
He also addressed the issue of multiple taxation.
“We are confronting the challenge of multiple taxation across all tiers of government,” he said, commending states that have adopted harmonised tax laws to reduce burdens on citizens.
“The new year marks a critical phase in implementing our tax reforms, designed to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation for Nigeria,” he said.
