President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has challenged Nigerians to embrace a new national mission centred on economic prosperity, unity and inclusive development.
In a nationwide Democracy Day address, the President said a historic responsibility defines every generation, and that the task before contemporary Nigerians is to secure prosperity for future generations.
“Every generation has a defining responsibility. The generation of our founding fathers secured independence—the generation of June 12 secured democracy. Our generation must secure prosperity,” he said.
The President urged citizens to reject pessimism and work together to build a stronger nation.
“Let us move forward together—rejecting division, cynicism, and despair; embracing unity, hope, and confidence,” he said.
According to him, Nigeria’s diversity should be seen as a source of strength rather than division.
“Let us build a Nigeria united by a common purpose, strengthened by diversity, where justice is accessible, liberty is secure, and opportunity is abundant,” he said.
Reflecting on the country’s democratic journey, the President noted that many once doubted Nigeria’s ability to sustain democratic rule because of its ethnic, religious and cultural diversity.
“Fellow Nigerians, 27 years ago, many doubted democracy would survive here because of our diversity. Today, our diversity sustains our democracy,” he said.
The President acknowledged the challenges confronting the nation but expressed confidence in the resilience of Nigerians.
“The road ahead is steep. But June 12 reminds us: Nigerians do not break. We bend, we bleed, but we do not break,” he said.
The President called on citizens to renew their commitment to the ideals of democracy and national unity.
“Let us renew our covenant: That the labours of our heroes past shall never be in vain, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from this land,” he said.
